Families kick it Canadian-style at winter dance party

January 27, 2010

EDUCATION REPORTER

Is your family feeling patriotic?

Party with breakdancing Mounties, Yetis, polar bears and “dance up a snowstorm” – an indoor one, mind you – at this year’s Bunch Family dance party, being staged this Saturday at the Guvernment as part of WinterCity 2010.

“This winter is about celebrating Canada,” says Rebecca Brown, Bunch’s creative director and co-founder, who has even booked impersonators of the ultimate hosers, Bob and Doug McKenzie, as hosts.

She’s expecting about 1,500 parents and kids to come out to the third annual mega-dance party, which sells out every year.

“We want to celebrate that which is positive and magical about winter,” especially with the upcoming Olympics in Vancouver, says Brown.

A portion of ticket sales even goes towards the World Wildlife Fund’s arctic program.

One room at the Guvernment will be for kids to create an “extreme snowstorm,” and while Brown doesn’t want to spoil the surprise, she said they’ll also get to make their own version of the Northern Lights.

The appeal of Bunch activities are that they’re fun for both children and parents. “I feel our parties are like a really good episode of Sesame Street,” says Brown, with lots of fun for kids as well as pop and cultural references “and clever things to entertain parents.”
