The Toronto Star is today launching a new annual award for Ontario teachers, similar to our popular Nightingale Award for nurses.
We're asking Star readers – parents, students or colleagues – to nominate someone special in the teaching profession for the first-annual Toronto Star Teacher Award, which will be announced next October in anticipation of World Teachers' Day.
Your nomination must include a 250- to 500-word personal account explaining why the teacher deserves to be recognized, and must relate to the 2008-09 school year (September to June).
For more details, or to submit a nomination, go to thestar.com/teacheraward.
The new Toronto Star award will be in addition to the current OTIP Teaching Awards, which are sponsored by the Ontario Teachers' Insurance Plan and administered by the Ontario Teachers' Federation – the professional association that represents 155,000 teachers at publicly funded schools.
More than 100 teachers were nominated for the awards this year. Winners Alicia Gunn, Marc Lalonde and Maureen Hogan each receive $1,000, as will their schools.
For videos on each of the winners, go to teachingawards.ca and click on the honourees tab.
