WASHINGTON–Oral cough and cold medicines sold over-the-counter should not be used in children younger than 4 years old because of the risk of rare complications, a U.S. industry group said Tuesday.

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association, which represents Procter & Gamble Co., Novartis AG and other companies, said it made the decision in consultation with the Food and Drug Administration, which last week held a public meeting to weigh use of such products in children.

Cough and cold medicines available without a prescription include Wyeth's Dimetapp, and Procter & Gamble's NyQuil, Novartis AG's Triaminic, and Johnson & Johnson's Tylenol and PediaCare, among others.
