BABY NAME

Lex appeal wins parents' approval

If their first-born was a girl, she would have been Alexia or Alexis, and nicknamed Lexi.

Scott Halliday and Colette Szalay were so convinced they were having a daughter – Szalay even dreamed she was carrying a girl – they had not picked out any boy names.

Then the baby arrived last March 1, a week early. A boy.

"We thought about it for a good week – we didn't have a name, we called him `the baby,'" says Szalay.

"But after that, we thought `what if we took the nickname Lexi and shortened it to Lex?'"

The Barry's Bay couple liked the sound of Lex Halliday. "It's a cool name, a strong name," explains mom.

Lex Noah Atticus Halliday, the couple's first child, weighed just under 7 lbs. when he was born at Pembroke Regional Hospital.

They decided against Alexander as a first name, since they didn't think they'd ever use it, and gave him two middle names because they couldn't decide which one they liked best.

Noah is a "softer" alternative should their son not like the name Lex, mom says, but Lex Noah Halliday seemed too short.

Initially, Szalay wanted Atticus as a first name, but Halliday wasn't as keen so it became a second middle one.

"It's an old Roman name, and I read about it in To Kill A Mockingbird," she says. "I always thought it was neat."
