David Camplin and Hwaling Huang grew up worlds apart but they met and married in her homeland, Taiwan, where they both teach English.

The couple wanted a name for their first-born that reflected their travels, their love of nature – something "with depth," Camplin said of son Ocean Blaze, born Sept. 20 in Douliou.

"Once we decided, I couldn't think of a cooler sounding name," Camplin, 28, said via email from Taiwan.

"Truly, when you think of the ocean, you think of the great power it has and all the expanse. When you look into the ocean, the colours you see are remarkable." Blaze represents the fire and passion they hope their son will possess.

"We came up with the name just by talking – I have always liked nature-type names and so we went from there. As a teacher, I wanted a name I couldn't put to a face."

There's another connection for the name: Camplin used to work on a cruise ship.

For now, Ocean is nicknamed dee dee, which means little brother in Mandarin, and sw-eye dee, handsome younger brother.

Grandma Yvonne Camplin Taylor said she wasn't surprised by their choice. Given her son's personality, she was relieved.

"They told me it was an `O' name, and the only name I could think of was Oscar, and I thought `oh please, don't call him that.'...Ocean sounded very calm after that."

She added, laughing: "He said they met oceans apart, and wanted a name with depth. Crazy."

Camplin and Huang recently bought the family farm in Clarksburg, Ont., near Collingwood, and plan to move in next spring.

"He's a sweetheart," Camplin Taylor said of her newborn grandson. "I can hardly wait to hold him in my arms."
