WHAT'S YOUR NAME?

Baby names reflect that miracles do happen

Daniele Capozzi got a call at work on a Friday, six weeks before the baby was due. His wife, Giovanna, was to have an emergency caesarean. Their son arrived the next day, last Sept. 12, weighing 5 pounds, 13 ounces.

Seconds after he was born, they looked at each other. Something clicked.

It was a miracle, Giovanna says. "The fact that he was born, and born healthy, it was this gift from God, from God's love. That's why at that moment, I said the name had to be Amadeo."

Daniele, who has studied Latin, says the little-used name means "loves God" or "love of God."

What was miraculous, Giovanna says, was that she was already in the hospital – her water had broken – when the placenta detached.

The family says faith is an important part of their lives. Their first born, Gianpaolo, is named after Pope John Paul II.

Before Amadeo was born, the North York couple had been in the thick of baby-name discussions; they didn't even know if they were having a boy or a girl. Daniele had suggested Amadeo early on and Giovanna researched the name.

"He was a saint who abandoned all his riches," she says. "He gave it all up to live a humble life. It was something we wanted to pass on."

The baby has no middle name.

"There was nothing to add," says Daniele.

Amadeo already has an anthem, "Rock Me Amadeus," by Falco. "He gets the lullabies too," Daniele says, "but when he's in a good mood and we're in a good mood, that's what we sing to him."
