Health Canada recalls kids’ jewelry for possible lead, cadmium

OTTAWA—Health Canada is recalling a range of children’s rings, anklets, bracelets and necklaces because the products may contain excessive levels of lead and cadmium.
The health department says the recall involves various pieces of kids’ jewelry and a skull cellphone charm sold with the brand names “Impulse! & Co.” and “Party Princess.”
Nearly 29,500 units of the recalled jewelry were sold at various stores across Canada from January 2005 to December 2011.
The recalled items may contain lead and cadmium which exceed guidance levels proposed recently by Health Canada.
Lead and cadmium are known to be especially toxic for children, who can ingest the metals when they chew, suck or swallow affected jewelry items.
Serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions and coma. Exposure can also have adverse effects on the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, exposure can be fatal.
